The history of wine in Veneto

The joy of a glass of wine has inspired numerous poets and historians throughout the centuries. From Suetonius to Cassiodoro, from Horatio to Carducci, from Martial to Baudelaire, and from Pliny the elder to Goldoni.
Wine is something that is constantly taking on new forms.
Some wines no longer exist, such as the Greek "pictanon" which was fermented with resin. This wine was the lifelong favorite of Livia, the wife of Caesar Augustus.
Its production is inexorably bound to the rise and fall of fortunes in the history of mankind.
Historians claim that the wines from the Triveneto region date back as far as the bronze age. The Etruscans were the first to bring vine cultivation and winemaking to the Veneto plains. Later, the Romans increased vine cultivation concentrating it in the highlands and lowlands of Friuli, the Euganei hills, the Treviso Marches, Verona and the entire Adige valley.

But what of the Veneto wines today?
There are many. More than sixty different types.
All of them are of extremely fine wines.
Let's start with "Tocai", originally a wine from Friuli, but which has now spread all over the provinces of Treviso and Venice. "Verduzzo" is another wine from Friuli. Then there are the pinots, "Pinot Bianco" and "Pinot Grigio" which are both well-known in Trento and Bolzano. "Sauvignon" and "Traminer" are two more typical Trentino wines.
Italian and Rhine "Riesling", "Merlot" and the dark "Borgogna" have become very successful and are now produced in central and southern Veneto. World famous and eternally loyal are the Veronese wines such as "Soave", "Bardolino", red and white "Recioto", "Valpolicella", "Valpantena" and "Amarone", the classic "Valtramigna " and the Lake Garda "Rosé".

Sure and solid in the Marches are the white wines from Conegliano, Valdobbiadene, San Pietro di Barbozza (Cartizze), and Vittorio Veneto.
There are the wines from the hills of Soligo, Orsago, and Ormella. Whereas the Euganei hills continue to excel in the antique tradition of "Moscato".
Breganze keeps up its heritage of "Torcolato", "Vespaiolo" and "Cabernet". The Triveneto wine panorama is completed by "Gambellara" from Vicenza, "Teroldego" and "Marzemino" from Isera, "Malvasia" from the part of Istria near Gorizia and last of all "Piccolit" from Friuli.
